Economy: How can we afford it?

In our vision about the coming negotiations we need independence now. It is urgent for all the reasons we have mentioned. The basis for our solution to solve all our challenges is to take full responsibility for building our nation.

We envisage that the "block grant" from Denmark should continue for 30 years. We have chosen 30 years because this allows for a completely new generation that has been raised in freedom to take the responsibility for how we can become independent of the block grant.

30 years is a long time without being too long. Nobody can predict what will happen within the areas of climate, energy, minerals, foodstuff, geopolitics, the world economy and so on. All these are all part of what drives how the world develops, a development we will also become a part of and a development we will take full responsibility for from day one.

Because we will become independent from day one our ability to take the necessary decisions will be strengthened. We will be able to act as a nation and trade with those we want, in the way we want, obviously while still respecting the partnerships we have. We believe that the responsibility that comes with independence will create the necessary growth to finance the future Kalaallit Nunaat.

Why will Denmark accept this?
First and foremost it would be both morally and ethically correct that Denmark accepts to pay after 300 years of free use of Kalaallit Nunaat. This alone should be sufficient as a reason seen from human and people perspective.

But it happens to be good business for Denmark too. By limiting the block grant to 30 years Denmark will know the exact value of the cost of Kalaallit Nunaat. This cost would be significantly less than paying the block grant as a perpetuity (in all eternity).

Denmark pays (in 2021) around DKK 3.7 billion (roughly USD 600 million) as a block grant to Greenland. On top of this an estimated DKK 1 billion is paid for the judiciary system, police as well as the military presence, i.e. a total of about 4.7 billion. The value of 4.7 billion (block grant plus other expenses) as an perpetuity at 1.2% interest is DKK 392 billion.

If, on the other hand, Denmark pays this amount for 30 years at the same interest, the cost will only be DKK 130 billion. In this we have even included that annual increase based on an expected increase in the cost index calculated as half of the interest rate.

The point is that Denmark will gain DKK 262 billion in todays value by helping Kalaallit Nunaat to become independent now.

We need to, of course, negotiate how we share that profit, but it is undoubted a good deal for Denmark.

Movieclip: "Why will Denmark agree to this?" (in Kalaallisut)

Future cost of running our own nation.
Today the linkage to Denmark is of such character that many of the public services within health care, education, general administration and social services are created in the same spirit as those seen in Denmark. When this linkage to the Danish public service will cease, then new opportunities arise to make these services more efficient, by adapting them to our needs. There will be room for innovative solutions based on new principles for democracy, involvement of citizens, and administration. This means that Kalaallit Nunaat most like will be able to see an administration which will better serve the economy of Kalaallit Nunaat.

Who is Inuit Nutaat?

We are ordinary citizens in Kalaallit Nunaat and kalaallit in other parts of the world who share a burning desire for, and work for Greenland as an independent nation, with a population that takes responsibity for ourselves as free and independent people.
